Step-by-Step Truck Cap Installation

The LEER NexCap and NexCap Lo are modular aluminum truck caps designed for durability, versatility, and a precise vehicle-specific fit. Unlike traditional one-piece caps, these systems arrive in components and require both assembly and installation, making them ideal for shipping efficiency and customization.

This guide walks you through the full process—from assembling the cap panels to securely mounting the system onto your truck.

Before You Begin

Tools & Materials

  • Socket wrench set
  • Hex/Allen wrench set
  • Torx bit set
  • Rubber mallet
  • Threadlocker (recommended)
  • Soapy water (for seal installation)

What’s Included

Your NexCap/NexCap Lo kit includes:

  • Roof panel
  • Front, rear, and side door panels
  • Bottom rail profiles
  • Mounting brackets and connectors
  • Sealing strips (EPDM foam and waterproof seals)

Assembly Instructions (Cap Build)

Step 1: Assemble the Base Frame

  • Insert the front and rear panels into the bottom side rail profiles.
  • Use a rubber mallet to gently secure them without damaging the materials.

Step 2: Install Door Seals

  • Ensure seals are aligned evenly for proper weather protection.

Step 3: Install Mounting Bolts

  • Insert M8 square neck bolts into the panel slots.
  • Add stainless steel sleeves and washers, spacing hardware evenly across both sides.

Step 4: Attach the Roof Panel

  • Place the roof panel on top with reinforcement ribs facing downward.
  • Align bolts with pre-drilled holes and center the panel.

Step 5: Pre-Tighten Hardware

  • Install washers and cap nuts onto roof bolts.
  • Only tighten the center hardware initially—leave side fasteners loose for adjustment.

Step 6: Install Waterproof Seals

  • Clip waterproof rubber strips along the roof edges.
  • Ensure correct orientation and full contact with panel edges.

Step 7: Install Side Panels

  • Apply soapy water to sealing areas for easier installation.
  • Slide side door panels into position simultaneously on both sides.

Step 8: Secure Side Panels

  • Fasten side panels using anti-theft Torx screws.
  • Apply threadlocker and leave slightly loose for final alignment.

Step 9: Final Panel Connections

  • Connect side panels to the roof using flange nuts and additional hardware.
  • Ensure seals remain properly seated throughout installation.
  • Fully tighten all fasteners once aligned.

Step 10: Install Roof Rack (If Equipped)

  • Insert slider nuts into roof channels.
  • Attach roof rack brackets and secure using M8 hardware.

Step 11: Install Doors & Hardware

  • Attach gas struts to side doors
  • Install door handles and secure with bolts

Step 12: Secure the Base

  • Flip the canopy and secure all panels to the bottom rails.
  • Install bottom rubber seals to protect the truck bed and improve sealing.

Installation Instructions (Mounting to Truck)

Step 1: Apply Protective Seals

  • Install EPDM foam strips along the bottom edges of the cap.
  • Do not overlap existing seals.

Step 2: Insert Slider Nuts

  • Insert slider nuts into the bottom rail channels of the canopy.
  • Position them evenly for bracket installation.

Step 3: Install Mounting Brackets

  • Attach front, rear, and middle connectors to the truck bed rails.
  • Use supplied bolts and washers, leaving hardware slightly loose.

Step 4: Position the Cap

  • Carefully lift and place the assembled NexCap onto the truck bed.
  • Align it with the mounting brackets and bed rails.
  • (Tip: This step typically requires two or more people.)

Step 5: Secure the Cap

  • Fasten the canopy to the brackets using supplied bolts and washers.
  • Tighten all mounting hardware once properly aligned.

Step 6: Final Inspection

  • Check all bolts and fasteners
  • Ensure seals are properly seated
  • Open and close all doors to confirm proper alignment
  • Verify the cap is securely mounted and stable

Pro Tips for a Successful Installation

  • Do not fully tighten hardware until final alignment is complete
  • Use threadlocker to prevent loosening over time
  • Always install seals carefully to prevent leaks
  • Recheck all fasteners after the first few uses
