LEER Displays "Survival Patrol" Tundra V8 at SEMA
Who comes to your rescue when you're in trouble off-road? The 'Survival Patrol!'

The wide open spaces beckon – and today’s pickups and SUVs have all the power and poise to take you into the unknown. But who is there to bring you back out again if there’s an emergency? LEER says that’s the job of the “Survival Patrol,” a project truck based on the remarkably capable Toyota Tundra Double Cab pickup, and enhanced by a team of truck accessories experts for display in the LEER Booth (#33145) at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November.

“Survival Patrol” is a mission that demands rugged reliability – which makes the legendary durability of the Toyota Tundra such an asset, especially when it is combined with Toyota’s 4.7 Liter 32-valve overhead cam V8, producing 271 hp at 5400 rpm and 313 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm. Comfort is a key part of the Tundra package too, with generous seating and luxury conveniences for passengers. But when LEER put together a team to build its prototype “Survival Patrol” Tundra, every capability of the truck was enhanced, with state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge style.

To get critical survival gear where it has to go safely and securely, LEER capped off the Tundra with its premium fiberglass truck cap, the Model 100XQ. The 100XQ features distinctive style lines and details that mirror key design elements of each truck it is designed to fit. Beyond that, the LEER 100XQ features a one-piece solid curved glass rear door with a LEER Twist Handle lock system and keyless remote; one-piece tinted twist-out side windows with screens; carpet-style interior headliner; a 3-outlet 12-volt power block; and a ceiling-mounted nylon interior storage net, handy for survival blankets, life jackets, and other bulky items. A Linex bed box slide-out has been added to the truck bed to store small parts and gear; along with a Wise BedRug to protect the truck bed surface. The entire truck wears an unmistakable high-visibility paint scheme courtesy of Dupont.

On top of the LEER 100XQ truck cap is a complete roof rack system from the world’s leading manufacturer, Thule, who is the exclusive supplier of roof racks for LEER’s fiberglass truck cap line. Thule rack systems accept a dizzying array of authentic Thule accessories that enable the “Survival Patrol” to carry everything from ladders to snowshoes, cross-country skis to mountain climbing gear. That’s the kind of gear-carrying flexibility that any truck owner loves, and the Thule system is exclusively available as a factory installation from LEER.

When other truck accessories manufacturers heard about the concept behind the LEER “Survival Patrol,” they responded to the challenge of gearing up a truck with a mission to help other off-roaders. Included in the build-up of the drive train and running gear are:

  • 7 inch lift kit from CST
  • Shocks and 8” coil-overs from Ryan Sway Away
  • KMC XD Assault wheels with 5” red bead lock back space
  • Toyo MT 18 x 35 tires
  • High-performance exhaust from Magnaflow
  • CGS Intake manifold
  • Three Optima batteries
  • Performance chip from Super Chips
  • Big brake kit from Baer
  • JBA Headers
  • Vortech Supercharger
  • TM Machine engine dress-up kit

The “Survival Patrol” can’t shy away from the dirt, rocks, and brush that most off-roaders would avoid, but thanks to LEER Project Truck participants, it can go anywhere it has to go, wearing:

  • Winch from Warn
  • Front and rear push bumpers from Smitty Built
  • Billet grille from Precision Grill
  • Front grille plate from Road Armor
  • Retractable steps from AMP Research

Lights and sound equipment are essential when survival is at stake and the “Survival Patrol” is on call 24 hours a day. As a result, accessory suppliers provided:

  • Lights from Pilar
  • Light bar from XTC
  • Air horn, CB/PA system, strobe lights and bullet lights
  • Flood lights from PIAA
  • Tail lights and head lights from Genera/TYC

Inside, Project Truck partners combined touches of luxury with lots of high-end electronics, including:

  • Katzkin custom leather and suede seats
  • Phoenix Dash Works carbon fiber dash kit
  • US Speedo gauges
  • Nifty custom carpet kit
  • Audiovox GPS navigation system
  • Audiovox/Jenson remote start

Audiovox further enhanced the interior environment with electronics that can do double-duty, providing entertainment for off-duty hours, or lifesaving communications for remote rescues, including:

  • 10” overhead console with built-in DVD, navigation and rear-view mirror camera capabilities
  • Collision avoidance camera
  • Sony XM Direct radio receiver
  • Audiovox Mobile Media head unit with 7” touch screen monitor and mobilized PC computer/DVD player
  • Two pairs of 6 x 8 in. in-door audio speakers and 4-channel amplifier
  • Four 12” woofers with discreet mono amplifiers
  • Four additional speaker pairs and two additional amplifiers for the truck bed.

If you don’t drive a Toyota Tundra, it’s reassuring to know that LEER and Toyota – and two dozen dedicated project truck partners – have thought about what it will take to get you back home if something goes wrong out in the wilderness. It just could be that the best sight you see on your wilderness trek is the Toyota Tundra “Survival Patrol” from LEER.
