Ron Perkins, a truck enthusiast and do-it-yourself customizer from Clackamas, Oregon, received the “Best Use of a LEER Cap” Award at the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, for his extensive modification and enhancement of his stock 2006 Nissan Frontier King Cab. Ron’s work on the Frontier pickup was honored by LEER officials after they reviewed scores of other project trucks using LEER products at the automotive aftermarket extravaganza held annually by the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association.
Perkins’s connection to the truck accessory industry goes beyond his hobby as a spare-time customizer. He is also works at LEER Clackamas, a major retailer of pickup truck accessories in the state of Washington. His prize-winning entry featured a LEER Model 100XQ truck cap that protected and secured suspension-adjusting compressors and control lines.
While Ron’s ‘day job’ gave him complete familiarity with the LEER product line, he enlisted the help and support of over a dozen other sponsor companies and truck accessory experts to execute his vision for the prize-winning Frontier. From high-performance parts to extreme audio and video enhancements; from dramatic modifications of suspension and running gear, to one-of-a-kind interior décor, Ron’s creation was an impressive showcase for his sponsors’ products – and a worthy recipient of the LEER award.
Most radical of the modifications was Ron’s trick of turning the standard Frontier King Cab into a completely non-standard Frontier “Regular Cab”, a configuration not even offered by the manufacturer, that required Ron to cut the truck in half, remove the King Cab rear passenger space, then put the two halves of the truck back together. His flawless body work stunned the experts at the SEMA Show, where his truck, in one of the venue’s most prominent display spaces just outside the convention center entrance, impressed busy show-goers and inspired thousands of photographs.
In addition to LEER, Ron’s sponsors for this year’s winning Frontier included:
